The Crucible

November 1, 2017 - November 4, 2017

Please note the matinee performance on the 4th November has been cancelled. All other performance remain the same.

Rather excitingly, Arthur Miller’s iconic play comes to the Tower Theatre, courtesy of FHODS, from Wednesday 1st November to Saturday 4th November at 7.30 pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30 pm.

The story told is of the Salem Witch Trials. It began in 1692, over an exceptionally raw Massachusetts winter, when a minister’s niece began to scream and convulse. It ended less than a year later, but not before panic had infected the entire colony, nineteen men and women had been hanged and a band of adolescent girls had brought Massachusetts to its knees. Written in the 50’s. Arthur Miller is also    presenting us with a parable of the McCarthy communist witch hunts and the message of the play is still very relevant today.

To say that ‘The Crucible’ is a harrowing play is no exaggeration. To add that, as such, it is also written in such an engaging and thrilling way that it provides an evening unparalleled for and engrossing drama.

The cast comprises a mix of seasoned FHODS’  performers, brilliant performances by members of FHODS Youth Section and some newcomers to the Society, including Geoff Dale as John Proctor, the man who stands up for what he believes in, and dies for it and Kelly Yarrow as Mrs Ann Putnam, a haunted woman ready to blame the deaths of her children on witchcraft. Merewyn Forrest (Elizabeth Proctor), Nick Shread (Reverend Parris), Stephen Hawkins (Reverend Hale), Peter Raine (Deputy    Governor Danforth and Natalie Cornish (Abigail   Williams) head a marvellous cast in what promises to be an exceptional production.

The play is directed by Paul Sherman, his second production for FHODS, the first being the highly  successful ‘The Ladykillers’ in February this year. His comment on ‘The Crucible’:

‘If the audience go away shocked and stunned, then the play will have done its work.’
